Sikkim Police has been deploying technical and human intelligence to locate and arrest Samson Tamang for the past week, officials inform. Samson Tamang, it may be recalled, has been accused of inflammatory and communally insensitive comments against the Chettri and Bahun people.
In a press release providing an update on the investigation and efforts to apprehend the accused, the DIG [Range] informs that following a complaint lodged by executive members of Akhil Sikkim Khas Chettri Bahun Kalyan Sangh, a case was registered on 03 February against FIR No 18/2025 u/s 196(1)/299/352/353(2) BNS.
It is informed that a notice under the appropriate legal provisions was served on 04 February to the accused through his family members since he gone dark, with his phones switched off since 02 Feb. Incidentally, the notice had directed the accused to appear before the Investigating Officer on 07 February last Friday, at Sadar Police Station.
“In the meantime, surveillance was initiated in coordination with neighbouring Police on the activities of the accused. However, when the accused failed to appear before the IO as directed, a Non-Bailable Warrant (NBW) was sought from the Learned Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Gangtok,” it is informed.
Three dedicated teams have been formed under the supervision of Sr SP Gangtok to apprehend the accused. These teams consisting of SSP Gangtok, SDPO Gangtok, 3 PIs and several other personnel have been conducting raids across North Bengal and New Delhi as part of the ongoing operation, it is informed.
“As the search and arrest teams remain at work, multiple leads have emerged, and each lead is being meticulously examined. The teams are actively deployed across various locations, working under the leadership of SSP Gangtok, to ensure the swift arrest of the accused,” the release adds.
