Gangtok, 16th February 2023(IPR): An Awareness cum Sensitization meeting on Indian Standards & Quality Control Orders for Gangtok District Level Officers was held at the conference hall, District Collectorate office.
The meeting was presided by Shri Hemant Rai, Additional District Collector, Gangtok, and was organised by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in collaboration with the Department of Food & Civil Supplies.
Shri. A. K. Purohit, Senior Director & Head, BIS, gave a Power-Point presentation on the following topics during the meeting:
- Indian Standards, Product Certification, and the Functions of BIS in the Quality Ecosystem.
- Indian Standard for the goods purchased and utilised by district government entities.
- How to locate BIS-licensed producers for a specific market.
It was mentioned that without a BIS license, products covered by BIS obligatory certificates cannot be sold in the open market and the requirement of ISI-marked products in tenders are mandatory (where manufacturers are available).
The representatives put forth their queries during the presentation which was taken by the executives from Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
Similarly, Shri Hemant Rai, ADC Gangtok interacted with the officials. He informed that the objectives behind the enforcement activity is to protect consumers from being misled about the quality of products that are marked with the BIS Standard Mark. He took note of various public policies, especially in areas of product safety, consumer protection, food safety, environment protection, building and construction during the PowerPoint presentation.
Earlier, Dibyendu Chakrabarti expressed his gratitude to the chair and all the representatives for attending the meeting. He said that the Bureau of Indian Standards(BIS) is the National Standard Body of India. BIS is responsible for the harmonious development activities for standardization, marking and quality certification of goods and matters.
He stated that 450 products are under the ambit of mandatory quality certification of the BIS which means that no person can manufacture, import, distribute, hire, lease, store or sell products without following the Indian Standards and obtaining BIS certification. These rules apply to foreign manufacturers as well, he added.
Further, he informed that there’s a handy tool application that empowers consumers to verify the authenticity of any ISI mark, Hallmark and CRS Registration marks on any product. He also mentioned that one of the important development in having a standardization quality ecosystem in the State is that a committee has been formed under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary.
He concluded his remarks by thanking all the dignitaries for their valuable suggestions and inputs.
