Summit Report, Gangtok 29 Jan:
Sikkim Krantikari Morcha today accused Citizen Action Party of politicizing the ‘forward-thinking initiative’ of the Ed Sheeran concert in Sikkim proposed by the Chief Minister as part of the 50 years of statehood celebrations here.
A press release issued by SKM Spokesperson Yougan Tamang, who is also the Press Secretary to the CM, states that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently emphasized India’s potential to thrive as a “concert economy,” citing the success of Coldplay’s performances in Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
The release adds that the PM highlighted India’s rich cultural heritage and dynamic youth population, urging both government and private sectors to invest in infrastructure to harness the economic and cultural opportunities presented by live events.
“In line with this visionary outlook, Sikkim’s Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has taken a pioneering step by proposing to host internationally renowned artist Ed Sheeran as part of the state’s 50th statehood anniversary celebrations. This initiative seeks to elevate Sikkim’s profile on the global stage, attract international attention, and foster economic growth through tourism, cultural exchange, and business opportunities,” the release states.
Mr Tamang adds that the Ed Sheeran concert would be more than just an entertainment event and would “symbolize Sikkim’s progress over the last five decades and aim to position the state as a premier destination for global events.”
It is further added that such initiatives generate employment across industries, including hospitality, transport, and event management, while also providing a platform for local artists to showcase their talents alongside global icons.
“Unfortunately, opposition factions, particularly the Citizen Action Party, have chosen to politicize this forward-thinking initiative. Their objections, which include concerns over financial prioritization, reflect a narrow perspective that disregards the long-term benefits such events could bring to Sikkim’s economy and its youth. These criticisms not only undermine the aspirations of Sikkim’s people but also stand in stark contrast to the progressive vision articulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” the release alleges.
The release adds that SKM strongly condemns the CAP’s attempts to divert attention from developmental goals. By opposing a globally significant initiative, CAP risks denying Sikkim an opportunity to align with India’s broader vision of becoming a global cultural and economic hub, the release alleges.
It is further added that their stance prioritizes political gains over the welfare and aspirations of the people, hindering Sikkim’s growth trajectory.
“The SKM firmly believes that such international events serve as catalysts for economic and cultural progress. Hosting Ed Sheeran will boost tourism, stimulate local businesses, and provide global exposure to Sikkim’s heritage. It is time for all political stakeholders to rise above petty politics and work collectively to make Sikkim’s 50th statehood anniversary a landmark event, celebrated with pride and unity,” the release states.
SKM has urged the opposition to recognize the far-reaching advantages of this initiative and collaborate to showcase Sikkim’s potential to the world. “Aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision, this celebration can pave the way for Sikkim to emerge as a shining example of India’s cultural and economic progress,” the release adds.
