The Great Backyard Bird Count was held in the Dzongu hills from 14 to 17 Feb, a press release informs.
From Sikkim, 57 birders engaged in the event, with more than 1000 lists have been generated and 250 bird species have been found. The five-member group which covered the Dzongu Hills in Mangan district listed more than 150 birds. With this extensive coverage of birding in Sakyong Pentong, the area is included in the bird count map for the first time.
The team involved in Dzongu included local birders Sonam Wangchuk Lepcha and Lhendup Lepcha, two birders from Pakyong district Rozan Dhungel, Tilak Dhungel along with the state Great Backyard Bird Count coordinator Dibyendu Ash, the release informs.
Mr Ash shares, “Frequent bird census and more such events will help in creating thorough avian diversity data of the remote Dzongu Hills. Participants and the local engagement was very thrilling and fulfilling.”
