SUMMIT REPORT, Gangtok, 13 Feb:
The Bhutia Kayrab Yargay Tshogpo today welcomed the introduction of Bhutia as a second language by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations [CISCE]. With this approval, Bhutia language can be introduced in ICSE schools from the current academic session itself.
Minister Sonam Lama, who is also the chief patron of BKYT, while making the announcement today, stated that this was the result of persistent efforts by BKYT organizations with strong support from the State government.
The Sangha MLA expressed gratitude towards Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, Education Minister Raju Basnet, CISCE officials, researchers, and the Government of India for the approval. The move aligns with the National Education Policy, ensuring Bhutia is part of private school curricula from the primary level up to Class X, he added.
This also opens the way for students to pursue higher education, including a PhD, in the language.
Education Department officials, including Secretary Chewang Gyatso, also shared their perspectives on the importance of this development in supporting linguistic diversity.
