SUMMIT REPORT, Gangtok 07 Mar:
The Multi-Technology Testing Centre and Vocational Training Centre, the College of Horticulture, Bermiok, successfully conducted a three-day training programme on “Vermicomposting and Enriched Composting” from 5 to 7 Mar, 2025. Sponsored by the ICAR-National Institute of Biotic Stress Management (NIBSM), Raipur, the programme aimed to equip farmers with sustainable composting techniques to enhance soil fertility and crop productivity. A total of 30 enthusiastic farmers from the region actively participated in the training.
The programme was coordinated by Assistant Professor (Agronomy), Dr Sunil Kumar Chongtham along with his team Dr S Vinodh and Dr Rupert Anand, who led interactive sessions on organic waste management and sustainable composting techniques. Key topics covered during the training included Fundamentals of Composting, Enriched Composting, Vermicomposting, and Preparation and Application of Organic Formulations – Hands-on training on Bijamrit and Jivamrit
Farmers actively participated in practical demonstrations and hands-on training, gaining firsthand experience in organic composting methods to improve soil health and fertility.
The programme concluded with an input distribution session, where farmers received enriched compost and seeds of seasonal crops, including cucumber, tomato, bottle gourd, chilli, and cowpea. The distribution was conducted by Dean of the College of Horticulture, Prof Sekhar Bandyopadhyay, Bermiok, along with the coordinating team and Dr M Soniya Devi.
This initiative underscores the College of Horticulture, Bermiok’s dedication to advancing sustainable agricultural practices and empowering farmers with essential knowledge and hands-on skills in organic farming. By organizing such capacity-building programmes, the college remains committed to fostering eco-friendly and sustainable agricultural development in the region.
