Education Minister Raju Basnet introduced four new bills during a one-day session of the Second Session of the Eleventh Assembly of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly. The proposed legislation is set to be discussed and voted on in the next assembly session.
The bills introduced include the Swastik University, Sikkim Bill 2025, the Trident University of Applied Sciences Sikkim Bill 2025, Sri Venkateshwara University Bill 2025, and the Sikkim Model Schools Bill 2025.
In his presentation of the Swastik University Bill, Minister Basnet emphasized the vision of the Tend Education Foundation, which aims to establish the university in Martam-Rumtek. The foundation seeks to empower the youth of Sikkim with essential skills for the future, transforming them into global leaders and innovators.
The Trident University of Applied Sciences Sikkim Bill focuses on the Ghanshyam Bohra Charitable Foundation’s plan to set up a self-funded university in Gyalshing District. This institution aims to provide skill-based education and contribute to the sustainable development of Sikkim’s populace.
Similarly, the Sri Venkateshwara University Bill, proposed by the Vardha Education Vikas Trust Foundation, seeks to establish a private university in Pakyong District. This initiative aims to offer specialized educational programs and promote inclusive growth through high-quality education.
Lastly, the Sikkim Model Schools Bill aims to create a government-aided school in Assam Lingzey, designed to exemplify innovative educational practices. The Minister noted that this school would serve as a model for others in the region and significantly contribute to the overall development of the area.
