Shamson Tamang, wanted in Sikkim ever since hateful remarks by him against the Khas community went viral on social media, was finally apprehended late Wednesday night from Bodhgaya, Bihar, it is informed. The arrest comes after nearly two weeks of exasperation and in the wake of wider condemnations of not only Shamson Tamang’s comments, but also his remaining in the wind despite claims that elaborate efforts were underway to trace and nab him.
The arrest was made by a Sikkim Police team assisted by Bihar Police. The Sikkim Police team was led by SDPO Tashi Chopel Bhutia, and included Investigating Officer PI DP Limboo, PI Naresh Chhetri, and SI Taman R Gurung, who were also part of the special investigation team set up to arrest Shamson Tamang.
The search operations had expanded to multiple locations, with leads followed up in Siliguri, Naxalbari, Salugara, Pani Tanki, Kurseong, Darjeeling, the Terai regions, and border areas near Nepal.
The accused was eventually traced to Bodhgaya. It is informed that the accused had also changed his appearance, having shaved his head and beard to avoid detection.
Following the arrest, the Youth of Sikkim Khas Association group called off the peaceful protests announced to demand the arrest.
